Ásbyrgi

Some trad climbing has been done in Ásbyrgi, reports say the rock quality is quite good.

Albert Leichtfried and Benedikt Purner drove past Ásbyrgi in february 2018. They found a cool line that they named Shelter of the gods, M 10/ M 9+.

After the route Shelter of the gods was established a discussion started about bolting in the national park of Jökulsárgljúfur, which Ásbyrgi is a part of. The Alpineclub wants to pass the message on to our members that bolting is not allowed within the national park of Jökulsárgljúfur.

The national park also wants to pass the following message on to everyone that wants to climb there:

“Because of circumstances the head ranger of Vantajökulsþjóðgarður in Jökulsárgljúfur wants to bring to the attention of the Icelandic Alpine club and its members that it is forbidden to cause damage to geological relics within the national park, such as attaching bolts to the rock, causing permanent damage. All implementation within the national park, big or small, need to be in accordance with the clauses in the laws regarding Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður (2007/60) along with the management and protection plans for the park. A permission must be acquired for all implementation that is not from the national parks initiative .”
