{"id":67976,"date":"2019-06-29T17:33:50","date_gmt":"2019-06-29T17:33:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.isalp.is\/?p=67976"},"modified":"2019-11-10T19:47:18","modified_gmt":"2019-11-10T19:47:18","slug":"english-gnar-for-breakfast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.isalp.is\/en\/problem\/english-gnar-for-breakfast","title":{"rendered":"Gnar for Breakfast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Route number 2<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">AD +, WI3 100m<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Vestri Hnappur is one of the peaks of \u00d6r\u00e6faj\u00f6kull. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">It is located on the south rim of \u00d6r\u00e6faj\u00f6kull. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The peak is 1851m and you can enter the climb at 1700m.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In order to access this peak, we traveled along the antenna access road behind Foss Hotel Glacier Lagoon and up to about 800 meters. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">We came to Stig\u00e1rj\u00f6kull at about 1000 meters and roped up from there to the base of the Vestri Hnappur. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In late June, this area is fairly crevassed and you will have to end run many crevasses as compared to earlier in the season.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">This climb is to the east of the previously climbed route, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isalp.is\/en\/problem\/einhyrningar-pd-wi3-100m\"><span class=\"s1\">Einhyringar<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">This path follows the avalanche gully, which is fairly steep but somewhat mellows out after the initial 6-7 meter steeper section. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">From there, it&#8217;s about a 50degree snow climb until the section just below the summit, which is the last tricky area until the walk to the top.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Overall, it&#8217;s not very changing climb but the lack of reliable protection makes it one to think about. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Ice screws are fairly useless being that I was only able to place 3, one of which I trusted, but if you bring an extra picket for intermediate protection, it would serve you well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Lastly, why &#8216;Gnar for Breakfast&#8217;? <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Because although it would not stand alone on the scale of a Gnarly climb, it was good enough as a warm up for something proper\u2026 hence, Gnar for breakfast.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">* As pictured, route # 1 is &#8221; <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isalp.is\/en\/problem\/einhyrningar-pd-wi3-100m\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Einhyringar<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> &#8221; and route # 2 is &#8220;Gnar for Breakfast&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Michael Reid, Eugene Gilbun, and Deividas Matkevicius &#8211; 24 June 2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Pictured is the 2nd coming up onto the 50 degree snow slope.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-67988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isalp.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_6820-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.isalp.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_6820-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.isalp.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_6820-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.isalp.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_6820.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Route number 2 AD +, WI3 100m Vestri Hnappur is one of the peaks of \u00d6r\u00e6faj\u00f6kull.
